VOICE OVER - "Fuel economy standards have escalated recently in countries throughout the world. This is driving automakers to identify new technologies to reduce overall vehicle weight and meet higher miles per gallon requirements for future models."

CRAIG PARSONS, PRESIDENT, AUTOMOTIVE - "For more than a decade, the steel makers have been working on high strength steels. And there has always been talk of the third generation, the next generation of advanced high strength steels; the very formable yet very, very strong materials. NanoSteel is really filling that gap."

VOICE OVER - "NanoSteel will allow the use of thinner gauges of steel to form lighter vehicle parts at room temperature while maintaining safety and desired noise, vibration and harshness characteristics. To understand the potential impact of NanoSteel’s nano-structured steel on vehicle lightweighting, NanoSteel commissioned EDAG to assess the use of its sheet steel on vehicle structural design. "

TAD MACHROWICZ - "By using EDAG, we have a solid base of information, a base of data and we know that the data is accurate.."

VOICE OVER - "EDAG deployed the same methodology used in a 2012 Light Weight Vehicle study it conducted for the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Using a computer generated body-in-white design from this study, EDAG replaced nearly 200 parts in the lightweight vehicle architecture with three classes of NanoSteel’s Advanced High Strength Steel. NanoSteel grade 1 for external body panels, NanoSteel grade 2 for front and rear crash rails and floor structures and NanoSteel grade 3 for very high-strength parts in the roof structure and body side-structure."

CRAIG PARSONS - "For the EDAG study, one of the things that we wanted to truly have was a true apples-to-apples comparison to the body structure that they had optimized."

VOICE OVER - "In the study, EDAG tested for torsional stiffness, bending stiffness and normal modes frequency to ensure the NanoSteel vehicle met noise, vibration and harshness requirements. Additionally, EDAG tested for frontal, frontal offset, side impact, side pole, roof crush and rear impact. The EDAG study findings demonstrated that use of thinner gauges of NanoSteel sheet maintained crashworthiness and NVH performance while generating a weight savings of thirty percent compared to the 2011 Honda Accord baseline vehicle and a ten point five percent weight savings over the NHTSA optimized lightweight vehicle."
